Why this certification exists

Why context engineering matters

The model is no longer the hard part. The hard part is the information environment you put around it.

An agent is only as good as what it can see at inference time. It needs the right instructions, trusted retrieval over governed data, memory that survives across sessions, tools it is allowed to call, a context window that stays inside budget, and evaluation that proves a change actually helped.

That is exactly what this certification tests. It is the first mainstream credential that treats context as an engineering discipline rather than a prompt trick — designing, assembling, and governing the information an agent receives, on a platform where the data, the metadata, the metrics, and the permissions already live.

If you already work in data engineering, analytics engineering, or platform work, you are closer to this skill than almost anyone. The context layer is built from the things you already own: definitions, business meaning, institutional memory, and portable contracts.

Coverage

What this free practice exam covers

Seven domains, mapped one to one to the sections and weights published in the official Databricks exam guide. Every question carries an explanation and a chapter to read next.

16% of the exam59 questions

Foundations of Context Engineering

What context engineering is, how it differs from prompt engineering, and how the information environment around an agent is designed and governed.

9% of the exam50 questions

System Prompt and Instruction Design

Writing durable instructions, role definition, output contracts, refusal behavior, and keeping policy out of brittle prompt text.

20% of the exam69 questions

Knowledge Retrieval and Genie Configuration

Vector Search and Genie spaces, chunking, metadata filters, hybrid search, grounding, citations, and Unity Catalog governance of what can be retrieved.

18% of the exam54 questions

Memory Architecture with Lakebase and MLflow

Short-term versus long-term memory, session state in Lakebase, tracing and evaluation with MLflow, and memory that survives across sessions.

13% of the exam59 questions

Tool Design, MCP, and Agent Context

Unity Catalog functions, MCP servers, tool descriptions as context, parameter design, permissions, and action control for agents.

11% of the exam47 questions

Context Compression and Compaction

Trimming, summarization, compaction checkpoints, token budgets, position effects, and the cost and latency of every extra token.

Multi-Agent and Long-Horizon Task Design

Context handoffs between agents, supervisor patterns, isolation boundaries, long-running task state, and evaluating whether context changes helped.

The experience

Built like a study tool, not a quiz app

Everything is free, works on a phone, and saves your progress if you close the tab.

45-question full mock exam

Weighted across the seven domains, the same shape as the official assessment.

90-minute timed mode

A live clock, auto submit, and the pressure of the real sitting.

Practice mode

No clock. Pick one domain and see the explanation the moment you answer.

Original scenario questions

Written by practitioners against the public exam guide. Never scraped, never memorized.

Detailed explanations

Why the right answer is right, and why each other option fails.

What you get back

A score report, not just a number

The second you submit, you see exactly which domains carried you and which ones cost you the pass — with the chapters that close each gap. Here is a sample.

Questions

Common questions

Is this practice exam really free?

Yes. The full question bank, the timed mock, and every explanation are free. We ask for an email only if you want new question sets, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Are these real exam questions?

No. Every question is written independently by practitioners from the public exam guide. Sharing real exam content would violate the Databricks certification agreement, and memorized questions do not teach you context engineering.

How close is it to the official exam?

The format matches the published assessment details: 45 scored multiple choice questions in 90 minutes, weighted across the same domains. The questions are our own scenarios, written at the same level of difficulty.

What are the official exam details?

The Databricks Certified Context Engineer Associate exam has approximately 45 scored multiple choice or multiple selection items, a 90 minute limit, a 200 dollar registration fee, and online proctored delivery. There is no prerequisite, and the certification is valid for two years. The version this practice set is built against became available on July 29, 2026.

How often is the bank updated?

We review it every month against the current exam guide and the Databricks platform releases. Subscribers get a note when new question sets land.

How should I use the two modes?

Start in practice mode by domain to learn, and use the timed mock a few days before your exam to test recall under pressure. Read the linked chapters for the domains where you score below seventy percent.
